I often wonder where we'd be right now if they had managed to come up with a better Wii successor. On the other hand, I think Nintendo's own games, at least the few we got, were stronger than their Wii counterparts barring a few exceptions. I see Miiverse as the only success of the Wii U hardware/OS. Using the Wii was fun, using the Wii U was an absolute chore. Just a very poor realization of a misguided concept. The second screen opened up some new gameplay possibilities but ended up holding it back more than anything. It was less a continuation of the Wii and more like a cheap imitation starting with the clunky and somewhat ugly UI. The Wii U feels like the complete opposite in many ways. Despite its limitations it didn't feel like a massively compromised system to me at the time even though it had its own share of issues (lack of HD out, limited controllers etc.) which helped it stand out agains the HD twins. First party output on the Wii was solid but I will mostly remember it for its more niche titles: Sin & Punishment, No More Heroes, Fragile, Little King's Story, Opoona, Elebits, Tatsunoko vs Capcom, Zack & Wiki, Endless Ocean etc. I generally look fondly back to the blue ocean/Touch Generations era even though I don't agree with all of their moves back then. The entire vibe they were selling felt warmer and more human than the "gamer marketing" of the 90s and early aughts. The Wii Sports, Mii Plaza and Shop Channel themes are absolutely iconic and I genuinely think a lot of the success of the system is owed to Totaka. Everything had this inviting and somewhat quirky feel to it. Wii Sports, the Miis, the Channel interface, Virtual Console etc. The Wii was a stronger concept and better realized product which in turn gave it its own unique identity. Overall I give it to Wii, but it is closer than I first thought. Wii family of games (Sports, Fit, Resort, ect) Head to head with the franchises I have it 6 to 5 in favor of the Wii-U Paper Mario: Wii (Super) > Wii-U (Color Splash) 3D Mario: Wii (Galaxy 1 & 2) > Wii-U (3D All Stars)ĢD Mario: Wii (NSMBWii) Wii-U (Rainbow Curse) ![]()
